A Day in the Life of an Open Look Graphic Design Manager – Kip Macasero

Describe a typical “day in the life” of a Graphic Design manager:

“I wake up every weekday at 8:40 pm like clockwork. I use an old fashioned alarm clock with the harsh bell ring (not the alarm on the cellphone because it does not wake me up all the time). Then I do my daily pre work rituals. I arrive at the office at 9:40-ish. Kiss my boss hello (hypothetically), log-in, check emails for open tasks and issues. Collaborate with my designers/editors for any updates or issues. Then plan my day and make sure the most urgent work gets done first.”

Did you have to make sacrifices at the start of your career? If so, what were they, and why was it worth it for you to make those sacrifices?

“Yes, there were a lot sacrifices I’ve made in this career. The first thing that pops into my mind is sleeping at night, in my bed with my wife. Which I only get to do this only 2 times a week. If there is a holiday, then that’s a plus one. But it is all worth it because I get to have a job that supports my family.

And I get to work with funny & talented colleagues who circuitously help in alleviating stress that comes with  my career.”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your career?

“The feeling of fulfillment after fixing an issue is what I always love. Also there is sense of pride when hitting & exceeding the targets that were set. Oh and there is also the paycheck.”

What’s the most challenging part?

“For me as part of a management team, the most challenging part is managing different kinds of personalities in the workplace. Some people are sometimes difficult to handle. And when that happens, I just go outside to cool down and think clearly, and then go back to work. A breather always works in my end. Patience (which I don’t have an abundance of) and understanding (good luck!) are the “keys”. Who ever the keymaster is, I’d like to meet him for some morning beers and ask him for some tips.”

Describe one of the best moments you’ve had on the job:

“Every time a project is done and approved by the client that was worked on by any of my designers/editors. This gives me a feeling of fulfillment knowing that my teammates are doing their tasks. Knowing that every time, a magazine or an ad or an edited image is done, the skillset of my designer/editor also boosts up. This adds up and contributes not only to the strength of the company but it also improves their design/editing skills.”

What’s the hardest part of the day?

“My hardest part of my day is when dealing with irate people whether they are colleagues or clients. One has to understand why they are feeling that way. You have to keep your cool to deal with it. I always think that it is nothing personal.”

Are there misconceptions about this type of work? If so, what are they?

“The most common misconception in this type of work is that people tend to think that this is an easy job. No it isn’t. We have responsibilities that need tending. Responsibilities which directly affect the clients’ projects, the livelihood of my teammates and most of all Open Look’s reputation.”

What’s one aspect that’s integral to your job that most people wouldn’t know?

“I have three. Communication, Trust & Teamwork.”

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in your field?

“Just do what you do, keep your head down and FOCUS and have fun doing your tasks!”
