Photo Retouching to Enhance Your Digital Photography Workflow

Photos tell a lot of stories. That’s the reason why photographers take time to study their subjects before the actual photo shoot.

Photography is about capturing reality. It’s about telling a story precisely how it is.

It’s about shooting raw. If you are shooting with your phone or a simple compact camera, it possibly saves your photos as JPG files. And that’s okay if you are not into retouching your photos.

If you want more control over your photos in post processing you might want to shoot raw. Camera won’t compress your photos and you’ll be able to control them more in photo editing applications like Lightroom, or Photoshop.

But shooting raw with no plan of doing any color correction or retouching is useless.

Color Correction and Retouching

The basic editing process comes into two parts. First one is simple to do but the second part is where you need to be cautious.

Download the raw files and place them into Lightroom and start the color correction process to fix the white balance, saturation and vibrancy. Also bring the shadows up and tone the highlights down or the other way around, depending on your photos.

You can also custom local adjustments like dodging or burning with a brush or graduated filters. See the result?

If you are not happy with the overall look of the image, you can proceed to editing them in Photoshop. Photoshop works much better for getting rid of undesirable artifacts from your photo. It does photo retouching better than Lightroom.

The thing is you can and should make good photo a better photo in post processing. As long as you know what you are doing with your camera, you have no reason for you to desist from photo retouching. There are some photos that really need editing heavily, but it doesn’t mean that you should go too far. Don’t. Improve your photos with retouching rather than change the reality.

How to Get Your Photos Retouched
